The church has Norman work with a few roman tiles in the chancel. Good wood is in the old timbers of the roof, with an ornamented crossbeam in the tower, left over from the ringing gallery of long ago.
The 15th century screen has four bays and the south chapel contain the impressive Alleyn monument of 1511.
The town’s name derives from a place where roe deer graze - and the surrounding area was certainly a royal hunting ground. Henry the Third is recorded as coming here in 1222 -– while Henry the Eighth later took deer to replenish Greenwich Park.
The Dutch House is a quaint thatched cottage with the distinction of being the oldest - and smallest - council house in England. The tenants enjoy a bargain rent in return for opening it to the public once a week!
